Singles Elimination Rounds Narrow the Field on Day 3

Las Vegas, Nev. – The Men’s and Women’s Singles elimination rounds started on Day 3 of the 2024 U.S. Open Table Tennis Championships.

 

Top-seeded Kanak Jha (USA) in the Men’s Singles bracket is in pursuit of his first U.S. Open Championships victory. Returning to the event after a six-year hiatus.

 

For me personally, it is still a special event because it's in my home country, and it's been a long time since an American-born has won the event. So that would also be extra special. – Kanak Jha

 

Jha delivered a stellar performance in the early elimination rounds. He faced Seiya Numamura (JPN), defeating him 3-1 (11-6, 11-4, 9-11, 12-10) while showcasing dominance on serves. Next, In the round of 32, Jha easily defeated Zhigao Si in three consecutive games.

 

Another 2024 U.S. Open Men’s Singles favorite, Benek Olah (FIN) and Tom Jarvis (ENG) battled fiercely, with their match tied after four games. Olah surged ahead in the deciding game to earn a hard-fought win and advance to the top 16.

In the Women’s Singles event, top-seeded Nina Mittelham (GER) advanced to the quarterfinals by day’s end. The World No. 22 narrowly escaped an upset against Wantong Liu, winning 3-2 (11-4, 10-12, 10-12, 11-7, 11-5). Mittelham then advanced past to Kheith Cruz in a straight-set victory, 3-0 to move to the next round.

 

Amy Wang (USA) made a strong showing in the Women’s Singles round of 32, defeating Kotomi Omoda (JPN) in three games. She continued her run in the round of 16, overcoming Gaoyang Liu in a tense five-game battle, 3-2 (11-4, 11-9, 7-11, 1-11, 11-3).

 

Men’s Singles—beginning with the Round 16, and Women’s Singles will continue to advance through the Quarterfinals with live coverage starting on Day 4,, Thursday, Dec. 19, 2024.
