Thiago Monteiro (BRA) and Youruo Wu (CA) Capture Men’s & Women’s Titles at 2024 Edgeball Chicago International Open

The 2024 Edgeball Chicago International Table Tennis Open, from October 26-27^th, featured almost 400 participants who traveled to Chicago, Illinois from around the globe. Players came from Czech Republic, France, Brazil, New Zealand, China and more than 20 states across the U.S. to compete in this annual event.

In the Open Singles event, Brazilian star Thiago Farias Monteiro emerged victorious, defeating Polish competitor Daniel Gorak in a well-fought 4–1 match. Both athletes showcased exceptional precision and power, treating the crowd to a fast-paced game filled with intense rallies.

In one of the weekend’s highlights, Chinese players Youruo Wu and Yixiao Wang captivated the audience with a nail-biting final in the Women’s Singles event. Wu narrowly claimed victory with a 3–2 win, concluding with a dramatic final set of 11-9. The final was played under the expedite rule, requiring each point to be won within 13 strokes, adding to the suspense and excitement. Their high-level defense and clever strategy had fans on the edge of their seats until the last point.

The Youth events added a fresh dose of excitement and introduced the audience to the next generation of talent. In the Juniors U18 category, Yudi Jin claimed the top spot, with Andrew Huang following closely as the runner-up. Juniors U14 saw Andrew Huang claim his  first place finish, while Krish Balaji earned second. Meanwhile, Mabel Mu captured the title in the Juniors U10 category, with Brianna Gomez taking home the silver medal. Each young player’s dedication and passion offered a hopeful glimpse into what lies ahead for table tennis.

This year’s Edgeball Chicago International Table Tennis Open truly delivered impressive matches and highlighted players from across the globe. Fans and players left with plenty to talk about and look forward to next year’s event.
