Member Clubs are Encouraged to Submit Applications to Serve as the Host of the Brand-New USATT State Championship Tournaments to be Held in Each of the Fifty States

(Colorado Springs, CO – January 20, 2023) – USA Table Tennis (“USATT”) the national governing body for the sport of table tennis, which is celebrating its historic Ninetieth Anniversary in 2023, today announced a brand-new set of nationwide tournaments intended to crown USATT State Champions throughout the United States. The new USATT State Championship Tournaments will serve as stand-alone tournaments and are intended to offer the widest possible variety of state title events to table tennis competitors in each of the fifty states.

One USATT Member Club in each state will be selected to host the USATT State Championship Tournament. Member Clubs are encouraged to submit their application to host the USATT State Championship in their home state as soon as possible. The deadline for application is Monday, February 20, 2023. The application for Member Clubs seeking to host a USATT State Championship Tournament can be found here: 2023 State Championships Application Form.

In contrast to the US National State Qualification Tournaments that USATT has offered over the past couple of years, the USATT State Championship Tournaments are self-contained events and will not serve as a qualification event for the US National Championships. It is expected that, in the immediate future, USATT will announce a separate series of events on the Regional Level that will serve as qualification tournaments for the 2023 US National Championships to be held in July.

USATT will host a ZOOM Teleconference on Tuesday, February 7, 2023, at 8:00 pm (US Central Time) to discuss both the 2023 USATT State Championship Tournaments and the 2023 US Nationals Regional Qualification Tournament. The ZOOM link is: https://us02web.zoom.us/j/86424295302?pwd=M1BTNkR6ZythSzZ3am5YNTV2U1RPZz09. The Meeting ID is: 864 2429 5302; and the Passcode is: 903467.

“We’re extremely excited to partner with our Member Clubs to offer this new set of tournaments that will serve to crown USATT State Champions throughout the United States,” said Chief Executive Officer Virginia Sung. “Although these USATT State Championships will not serve as qualification events for our US National Championships, we believe these events will offer our Member Clubs a valuable platform to showcase their facilities and provide participants of all levels from their state with an opportunity to claim a title as a USATT State Champion.”

For the USATT State Championship Tournaments, which will be considered a 4-Star Event, USATT is seeking to partner with host clubs that have the best possible tournament playing conditions and are willing and able to offer the greatest amount prize money for participants. USATT will provide marketing support to ensure the largest amount of participation possible in each state.

Considerable flexibility will be permitted in the number and type of events offered by the selected host clubs so that USATT State Championship titles can be awarded to both elite level players and those who participate at a more recreational level. The State Championships are intended to accommodate all age groups and formats, including doubles. The only requirement that will be enforced is that there must be a minimum of at least six participants in an event for that event to qualify for a USATT State Championship Title. The State Championship Tournaments can be held at any time during 2023, provided they are completed by October 31, 2023. This will allow USATT the opportunity to honor USATT State Champions in the open men’s and women’s singles events at the organization’s 90th Anniversary Gala, which will part of the US Open festivities in December of 2023.
